Symptoms

Type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, though it often appears during childhood or adolescence.

When to see a doctor

  • If you've already been diagnosed with diabetes. After you receive your diagnosis, you'll need close medical follow-up until your blood sugar levels stabilize.
  • Risk factors for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes

    • Race. Although it's unclear why, people of certain races — including black people, Hispanics, American Indians, and Asian-Americans — are at higher risk.
    • High blood pressure. Having blood pressure over 140/90 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) is linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
    • Watch for Warning Signs

    • Emergency Warning Signs

If your blood sugar is very high over time, that could lead to more serious conditions, including a coma or even death. Call your doctor right away if you:
      • Get very tired
      • Lose weight
      • Feel hungry a lot
      • Get very thirsty and pee often
